I agree that "football" will never be big in the U.S. All I ask as a fan and on behalf of the national team is respect from the media, especially TV. Most sport reporters mock us. May be they want it to disappear, as it almost did for a couple of decades. U.S. fans do not support any sport when it comes to international competition (eg. World Classic, Olympics basketball) There is always an excuse when the U.S. loses. We have been brought up to believe that we are the best in everything, which is ok, but why are in constant denial when we lose in international competition. "Football" is more popular than ever. You ask an 11 year old child in a tribe in Africa about what they think about Kaka or Ronaldo's transfer, and they can talk for hours. In the U.S., probably 35-40 million people would do the same. That's enough for me. Just leave us alone, and stop mocking the sport
